The Nimrod Passing H.M.S. Powerful, ... in Lyttelton Harbour, 1 January 1908, (1909)
The Nimrod Passing H.M.S. Powerful, Flagship of the Australasian Squadron, in Lyttelton Harbour, New Zealand, 1 January 1908, (1909). Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in exploration history. The image shows the Nimrod, led by Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton, passing H. M. S. Powerful, the flagship of the Australasian Squadron, in Lyttelton Harbour on 1 January 1908. Shackleton made three expeditions to the Antarctic, with this being his second from 1907 to 1909. During this expedition, Shackleton and his team achieved an incredible feat by reaching the Farthest South latitude at 88° S. This was just a mere 97 geographical miles away from the South Pole, marking it as one of the largest advancements towards that goal in exploration history. Not only did they come close to conquering the pole itself but members of their team also scaled Mount Erebus, which is known as Antarctica's most active volcano. Shackleton's achievements were so remarkable that he was knighted by King Edward VII for his contributions to exploration. Unfortunately, despite these successes, Shackleton met an untimely end during his third and final oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition when he passed away at age 47. This illustration comes from "The Heart of the Antarctic". Volume I written by E. H. Shackleton himself and published in London in 1909 by William Heinemann. It serves as a testament to both Shackleton's legacy as an explorer and his significant impact on our understanding of Antarctica.
