EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the exquisite craftsmanship of a Nautilus shell mounted in silver-gilt, once owned by Her Majesty in 1850. The intricate details of this artifact showcase the skilled work of unknown artists from the 16th and 17th centuries, who adorned the shell with figures of naiads, nereids, tritons, and other marine deities. The nautilus cup was a popular motif during this time period, symbolizing power and luxury.
The piece is described as not being the least admired among objects displayed at an exhibition of Ancient and Medieval Art in London. It features gilded silver mounts made by Nikolaus Schmidt and is part of the Royal Collection. Supported by a figure of Neptune and surmounted by Jupiter, this beautiful example truly embodies the opulence and grandeur associated with royalty.
The black-and-white image adds to the mystique surrounding this artifact, highlighting its historical significance as a favorite conceit among artists of past centuries. The nautilus shell itself is a marvel to behold, with its natural beauty enhanced by intricate metalwork depicting mythical creatures such as hippocamps and sea gods like Poseidon. This print serves as a window into a bygone era when artistry flourished under royal patronage.
