The Old Bridge at Croyland, Lincolnshire, 1894. Creator: Unknown
The Old Bridge at Croyland, Lincolnshire, 1894. The Trinity Bridge in Crowland (or Croyland) is a unique three-sided bridge dating from the 14th century that crossed the confluence of three streams running through the town. It was built to replace earlier wooden bridges, the oldest mention of which is by King Ethelbald of Mercia in 716. It is suggested that the figure represents Ethelbald. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the enchanting scenery of Croyland, Lincolnshire in 1894. The focal point is the remarkable Trinity Bridge, a one-of-a-kind architectural marvel dating back to the 14th century. This bridge was constructed to replace its wooden predecessors that had spanned three converging streams within the town for centuries. The image showcases the timeless beauty of this stone arch bridge against a backdrop of picturesque English countryside. Its historical significance is evident as it has been mentioned as early as 716 by King Ethelbald of Mercia, with some speculating that his figure is represented in this very artwork. Listed as a Grade I landmark and located in Crowland, this vintage photograph captures not only an extraordinary piece of British history but also highlights its importance as a tourist attraction even during Victorian times. The monochrome aesthetic adds an air of nostalgia and emphasizes the enduring charm of this location. As we gaze upon this print from Beautiful Britain; views of our stately homes published by The Werner Company of Chicago in 1894, we are transported back to a different era where time seemed to stand still. It serves as a reminder that amidst modernization and progress, there are hidden gems like Trinity Bridge waiting to be discovered and appreciated for their cultural heritage and architectural brilliance.
