The Old Signs Have Come Back To Lombard Street, c1935. Creator: W Whiffin
The Old Signs Have Come Back To Lombard Street, c1935. Signs in Lombard Street in the City of London, erected for the coronation of Edward VII in 1902. The signs had previously been removed, as they occasionally caused injuries or fatalities if they fell on pedestrians. Lombard Street, one of the main Roman roads of Londinium, was granted to goldsmiths from Lombardy in northern Italy in the 13th century, and was the origin of Londons banking and financial district. From " Wonderful London, Volume 1", edited by Arthur St John Adcock. [The Fleetway House, London, c1935]

The Old Signs Have Come Back To Lombard Street, c1935
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the nostalgic return of the historic signs to Lombard Street in the City of London. Erected for the coronation of Edward VII in 1902, these signs had been previously removed due to safety concerns as they occasionally caused injuries or fatalities if they fell on pedestrians. However, their reappearance in this image brings back a sense of charm and history. Lombard Street holds great significance as one of the main Roman roads of Londinium. It was granted to goldsmiths from Lombardy in northern Italy during the 13th century, becoming London's banking and financial district. The street's architectural beauty is evident through its buildings that line both sides. The photographer W Whiffin skillfully captures this momentous scene from "Wonderful London, Volume 1", edited by Arthur St John Adcock. The monochrome aesthetic adds a timeless quality to the image, emphasizing its historical context. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are transported back to a bygone era when trade signs adorned city streets and added character to urban landscapes. This visual representation reminds us not only of our rich heritage but also serves as a reminder that progress often comes with necessary precautions.
