The Oldham Lyceum Educational and Industrial Exhibition - the Baronial Hall, 1854. Creator: Unknown
The Oldham Lyceum Educational and Industrial Exhibition - the Baronial Hall, 1854. Display in Yorkshire....the Baronial Hall...has been fitted up with great taste, by Mr, George Shaw, of Saddleworth. The room, built for the occasion, displays a style of architecture referable to the latter part of the reign of Edward III. It has an open-timbered roof, large projecting fireplace, with raised hearth, dog-irons, windows high up the side walls, and a minstrel gallery, the twisted railing of which is of the time of Charles II. Here, Lord Brougham, Captain de Hollyngeworth, Messrs. George Shaw, T. Willement, and G. D. Tomlinson (Huddersfield), appear to be the chief contributors. The armour, swords, shields, spears, matchlocks, crossbows, &c, are very curious'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

This photograph print transports us back in time to The Oldham Lyceum Educational and Industrial Exhibition of 1854, specifically to the grand Baronial Hall. The room, erected for the occasion, showcases a striking architectural design reminiscent of the late medieval period, around the reign of Edward III. Its open-timbered roof, large projecting fireplace with raised hearth and dog-irons, windows positioned high up the side walls, and a minstrel gallery, adorned with a twisted railing of the time of Charles II, all contribute to the room's authentic medieval atmosphere. Lord Brougham, Captain de Hollyngeworth, Messrs. George Shaw, T. Willement, and G. D. Tomlinson (of Huddersfield) are among the notable figures seen in the print, admiring the various displays. The armour, swords, shields, spears, matchlocks, and crossbows on show are intricately detailed and add to the overall sense of historical authenticity. The Baronial Hall was meticulously furnished by George Shaw of Saddleworth, and the room's heraldic decorations and stained glass windows further enhance its mediaeval charm.
