Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658), c18th century (c1902)
Oliver Cromwell, c18th century (c1902). From Cassells Illustrated History of England, volune III (c1902). Cromwell was a Member of Parliament at the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642. As one of the judges at the trial of King Charles I in 1649, Cromwell signed the kings death warrant and became Lord Protector of England in 1653. He died in 1668 and was succeeded as Lord Protector by his son, Richard. Although Richard was not entirely without ability, he had no power base in either Parliament or the Army and was forced to resign in May 1659, bringing the Protectorate to an end. In the period immediately following his abdication the head of the army, George Monck, took power for less than a year, at which point Parliament restored Charles II as king. One of Charles first acts was to exhume Cromwells body from Westminster Abbey and hang it from the gallows at Tyburn; his head was set on a pole on top of Westminster Hall

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the stern face of Oliver Cromwell, a prominent figure in 17th century England. Taken from Cassells Illustrated History of England, this c18th century image showcases Cromwell's distinctive attire, complete with his signature hat. Cromwell's political journey began as a Member of Parliament during the English Civil War in 1642. His role as one of the judges at King Charles I's trial in 1649 led to him signing the king's death warrant and assuming power as Lord Protector of England in 1653. However, his reign was short-lived, and upon his death in 1668, he was succeeded by his son Richard. Richard Cromwell faced numerous challenges during his time as Lord Protector due to a lack of support from both Parliament and the Army. Forced to resign in May 1659, Richard marked the end of the Protectorate era. Shortly after Richard's abdication, George Monck took temporary control before Parliament restored Charles II as king. Charles II wasted no time seeking revenge on Oliver Cromwell for his involvement in his father's execution. One of Charles' first acts was to exhume Cromwell's body from Westminster Abbey and publicly display it by hanging it from gallows at Tyburn while placing his head on a pole atop Westminster Hall. This engraving provides us with a glimpse into an important period in British history when political turmoil reigned supreme and individuals like Oliver Cromwell played significant roles shaping their nation’s destiny.
