EDITORS COMMENTS
Olympus, 1743/1744 by Lorenzo De Ferrari This exquisite 18th-century drawing by Italian artist Lorenzo De Ferrari, dated around 1743 or 1744, captures the essence of Baroque art with its intricate details and rich use of color. The oval-shaped composition, executed in brown ink and brown wash heightened with white gouache over graphite on tan laid paper, depicts a group of figures from Greek mythology gathered at the foot of Mount Olympus, the abode of the gods. At the center, a bearded man, possibly Zeus, sits on a throne, his power and authority radiating from his regal posture. To his left, a winged woman, likely Hera, the goddess of marriage and childbirth, gazes intently at him. To his right, a winged man, possibly Hermes, the god of trade and thieves, holds a staff and looks off into the distance. Two other winged figures, possibly Eros and Apollo, flank the group, adding to the sense of movement and energy. The figures are depicted with a sense of confusion and panic in their expressions, perhaps reflecting the chaos and turmoil of the mythological world. The use of brown ink and wash creates a warm, earthy tone, while the addition of white gouache adds depth and texture to the figures and their wings. This stunning work of art, a testament to the artistic prowess of the Baroque era, is now housed in the Art Institute of Chicago, where it continues to inspire and captivate visitors from around the world.
