EDITORS COMMENTS
The Opening of the Colonial and Indian Exhibition by the Queen: 'Twixt East and West' (1886) is an intriguing black and white engraving that captures a significant moment in British history. The image, created for "The Graphic: An Illustrated Weekly Newspaper," depicts Queen Victoria (1819-1901) and members of the royal family, including her son, Prince Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII, 1841-1910), as they attend the grand opening ceremony of the Colonial and Indian Exhibition in London. The exhibition, held from May 1 to October 31, 1886, was a showcase of the art, industry, and culture of the British colonies and India. The Queen, dressed in a formal gown and headdress, is seen inspecting the exhibits, while the Prince of Wales, wearing military uniform and a top hat, bows to her. Surrounding them are Beefeaters, or Yeomen Warders of the Tower of London, and other dignitaries, all dressed in their ceremonial attire. To the right of the Queen, an Indian rajah, dressed in traditional clothing, is shown presenting a gift to her. The diverse crowd in the background, consisting of people from various occupations and countries, underscores the global reach of the British Empire. The image, titled 'Twixt East and West,' symbolizes the meeting of Eastern and Western cultures during the height of colonialism. This photograph offers a glimpse into the grandeur and diversity of the late 19th century, providing a fascinating window into the past.
