EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the outer court of La Belle Sauvage in 1828, a historic inn that once stood proudly in the heart of London. Established during the 15th century, this remarkable building served as a playhouse during Elizabethan times and later became an essential coaching inn for travelers. Sadly, its grandeur was lost forever when it was demolished in 1873 to make room for a railway viaduct. In this snapshot frozen in time, we witness the charm and elegance of old-world architecture. The intricate details of the building's facade are beautifully captured, showcasing its unique blend of styles from different eras. Horses draw carriages along Ludgate Hill, transporting passengers through bustling streets filled with life and activity. The photographer's lens transports us to a bygone era where horse-drawn vehicles were commonplace on country lanes and city roads alike. This image serves as a reminder of how transportation has evolved over time, highlighting the importance of coaching inns like La Belle Sauvage as vital rest stops for weary travelers. As we gaze upon this monochrome scene expertly preserved by George Walter Thornbury's publication "Old and New London" we can't help but feel nostalgic for an age long past. It is through prints like these that our connection to history remains intact—a testament to both human ingenuity and progress while honoring the architectural wonders that have shaped our cities throughout centuries gone by.
