EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait showcases P.B.S. Pinchback, an extraordinary figure in American history. Born on May 10, 1825, in Macon, Louisiana, Pinchback was a publisher, politician, and Union Army officer. He is most notably recognized for becoming the second African American to serve as governor and lieutenant governor of a U.S. state – Louisiana. Pinchback's political career began in the 1860s when he was appointed as a registrar of voters in Caddo Parish, Louisiana. He later served as a member of the Louisiana State Senate and was appointed as the lieutenant governor in 1872. Following the impeachment of Governor Henry Warmoth in 1872, Pinchback assumed the role of governor, serving from December 9, 1872, to January 13, 1873. This photograph, taken in 1887, captures Pinchback in his later years. The image reveals a distinguished gentleman with a well-groomed beard, donning a formal suit and a serious expression. The photograph is part of the Men of Mark: Eminent, Progressive and Rising collection, published by William J. Simmons. This historical artifact is a testament to Pinchback's significant contributions to American history. His achievements paved the way for greater representation and equal rights for African Americans in politics. Today, this portrait is preserved in the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, part of the New York Public Library.
