Pair of Graduals: Initial (M) with St. Andrew (recto) and Mass for the Dead (recto), c

Pair of Graduals: Initial (M) with St. Andrew (recto) and Mass for the Dead (recto), c. 1480. This leaf was excised from a volume of a large set of choral books known to have been commissioned by Bartolomeo delle Rovere for Ferrara Cathedral. Delle Rovere, nephew of Pope Sixtus IV, was the Bishop of Ferrara from 1474 to 1494 and his arms appear in the rondel at the bottom of the page-a shield bearing an oak tree (rovere in Italian) surmounted by a patriarchal cross, the symbol of his rank and authority. Payment records indicate that Argenta worked on the choir books for Ferrara Cathedral from 1478 to 1486. The initial M introduces the chant for the Introit (introduction) to the mass for the Feast of Saint Andrew, celebrated on November 30th. This date also marks the beginning of the Advent season (leading to Christmas) in the liturgical calendar

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning leaf from a pair of Graduals, dating back to around 1480. The leaf was originally part of a larger set of choral books commissioned by Bartolomeo delle Rovere for Ferrara Cathedral. Delle Rovere, who was the Bishop of Ferrara during the late 15th century, was the nephew of Pope Sixtus IV and held significant authority in his position. The focal point of this leaf is an exquisite initial "M" adorned with intricate details and vibrant colors. It introduces the chant for the Introit (introduction) to the mass dedicated to Saint Andrew, celebrated on November 30th. This date also marks the beginning of Advent season in the liturgical calendar leading up to Christmas. At the bottom of this page, we can see a rondel featuring Delle Rovere's coat-of-arms - a shield bearing an oak tree (rovere in Italian), topped with a patriarchal cross symbolizing his rank and authority. Created by Jacopo Filippo d'Argenta, an esteemed Italian artist known for his manuscript illuminations, this work exemplifies exceptional craftsmanship. The use of gold accents adds richness and depth to this masterpiece created using ink and tempera on parchment. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this print allows us to appreciate both the artistic beauty and historical significance captured within this remarkable piece from Renaissance Italy.
