Paris Demolitions - prisoner's chamber, 1864. Creator: Unknown
Paris Demolitions - the Hotel des Haricots, or prison of the National Guard of Paris: prisoner's chamber, 1864. Interior of '...the Hotel des Haricots, as the prison is facetiously called by the members of the Garde themselves, by reason of the solemn item that figures in the tariff of condiments affixed to the wall of each cell - "Haricots blancs a la maitre d'hotel, 50 centimes."...The term of imprisonment extends from twelve hours to eight days...the prison being open at certain hours every day for the reception of "convicted visitors." The approaching extension of the station of the Orleans Railway will necessitate the demolition of the Hotel des Haricots, and the consequent destruction of a large collection of drawings, paintings, and verses, drawn, painted, and inscribed on the walls of several of the cells, and signed by such names as Decamps, Gavarni, Gustave Dore, Daumier, Janet, Bertall, Theophile Gauthier, Henry Murger, Arsene Houssaye, Alfred de Musset, and a host of other celebrities who, even in their hours of punishment, contributed something towards the entertainment and instruction of future occupants'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a glimpse into the prisoner's chamber at the Hotel des Haricots in Paris, 1864. The interior of this prison, humorously nicknamed for its menu item of "Haricots blancs a la maitre d'hotel," reveals the daily life of those serving sentences ranging from twelve hours to eight days. Open to "convicted visitors" at certain hours each day, this unique establishment is filled with drawings, paintings, and verses adorning the walls - signed by renowned names such as Decamps, Gavarni, and Gustave Dore.
As the looming extension of the Orleans Railway station threatens the demolition of this historic site, there is a sense of urgency to preserve these artistic contributions made by celebrities even during their time behind bars. The collection serves not only as entertainment but also as a valuable source of instruction for future occupants.
Through this image, we are transported back in time to witness a moment frozen in history - where creativity flourished even within confinement. It is a reminder that art knows no bounds and can thrive in even the most unexpected places.
