Paris Fashions for April, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Paris Fashions for April, 1850. The frosty and snowy weather in Paris during the Longchamps promenades did not allow any great display of costumes. Our present Illustration shows some of the most fashionable. Although dresses are much worn the same, there is still a great alteration in the shape ot the sleeves, which are made a la pagode; and in the trimmings of the skirts which are all loaded with ornaments. Mantles in taffetas glaces are worn of dark shades, trimmed with passementeries and dentelles de laine, which are most fashionable this season. Bonnets are more than ever ornamented with bouillons de tulle, ribbons, flowers, and feathers; and some of them with a voilette de Bruxelles'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, hailing from the spring season of 1850 in Paris, showcases the elegant and intricately designed fashions that graced the streets of the City of Light during this time. The frosty and snowy weather may have hindered grand displays of costumes during the Longchamps promenades, but the fashionable elite still managed to turn heads with their stylish attire. Despite the similarities in dress silhouettes, the sleeves of the garments underwent a significant transformation, adopting the pagoda shape. Skirts, too, were adorned with an abundance of ornaments, adding an air of opulence to the ensembles. Mantles in glossy taffetas were a popular choice, featuring trimmings of passementeries and lace. Bonnets, meanwhile, were embellished with tulle bouillons, ribbons, flowers, and feathers, reflecting the season's most sought-after trends. Boys and girls were not left behind in the fashion race, as they, too, donned fashionable attire. Crinolines and hoopskirts were a common sight, while bonnets and top hats completed the look for men and women alike. This fascinating glimpse into the past is taken from the pages of the Illustrated London News, providing a captivating window into the world of Parisian fashion during the Victorian era. The intricate details of the clothing, from the lace trimmings to the ornate bonnet adornments, offer a glimpse into the elegance and sophistication of the time. The photograph print, though unsigned, stands as a testament to the enduring allure of fashion and the captivating styles that continue to inspire us today.
