Paris Fashions for March, 1850. Creator: Unknown

Paris Fashions for March, 1850. At no period since the French Revolution have balls been so numerous and so brilliant in Paris as this last month. These new bodies are quite tight, rather high on the chest, and trimmed with a square pelerine, two inches wide, ornamented with a plisse a la vieille: the sleeves are short, and without bows on the shoulders. The skirts are very full, and quite plain; and the richest silks, brilliant silver damasks, or satins, are selected for these toilets, with which no additional ornaments - either in ribbon, flowers, or lace - are worn (as our Engraving shows). These toilets attract attention by their extreme simplicity, in the midst of the gorgeous evening dresses, ornamented with flounces, double skirts, flowers, and jewels. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
Paris Fashions for March, 1850: A Glimpse into 19th Century Elegance This image, hailing from the pages of the Illustrated London News in 1850, showcases the Parisian fashions that graced the grand balls of the city that month. The French capital had not seen such a proliferation of lavish soirees since the French Revolution. The fashionable silhouette of the time featured tight-fitting bodices, high necklines, and square pelerines, adorned with a plisse a la vieille trim. The sleeves were short and devoid of shoulder bows, while the skirts were full and unadorned, allowing the finest silks, silver damasks, and satins to take center stage. The simplicity of these elegant ensembles stood out amidst the opulence of the evening dresses, which were often adorned with flounces, double skirts, flowers, and jewels. The absence of additional embellishments on these toilets added to their allure, making them a striking contrast against the more ornate attire of the time. The image, which depicts both male and female figures, highlights the elegance and sophistication of Parisian fashion during this era. The man, dressed in a tailored coat and wearing a top hat, gestures towards the woman, who dons a bonnet and a full-length dress with a fur collar. The print, though its creator remains unknown, offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of 19th-century fashion and the enduring allure of Paris as a fashion capital.
