The Paris Wine Market: the Brandy Quarter, Rues de Languedoc and de la Côte d'Or, the Cellars, 1860. Creator: Unknown

The Paris Wine Market: the Brandy Quarter, Rues de Languedoc and de la Cote d'Or, the Cellars, 1860. Engraving after a sketch by M. Lancelot. French wines...are likely to become mere generally consumed in England when the new treaty shall have come more fully into operation...the Entrepot, or Halle aux Vins (Wine Market)...is of vast dimensions, the superficies measuring nearly 150, 000 yards...In the interior of this vast inclosure there are five sets of constructions, divided into streets, and called (after the names of the most celebrated wine-growing districts in France) Bordeaux-street, Champagne-street, Burgundy-street, Languedoc-street, and Touraine-street...There are on an average from 400, 000 to 500, 000 casks of wine and spirit kept...[here], the construction of which...cost the city of Paris 30, 000, 000f. but brings in a very small return for such an outlay to the municipal treasury...The continual arrival and departure of the long wine-carts; the octroi men carrying on their inquisitorial but necessary operations previous to the exit of the vins; the merchants in and out of their counting-houses; the rolling about of barrels here, there, and everywhere; and, above all, a dominating smell of alcohol, rendered it an exciting scene'. The Paris Wine Market - the Brandy Quarter, Rues de Languedoc and de la Côte d'Or, the Cellars, 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
is an intriguing and lively depiction of one of the most significant commercial hubs of Paris during the 19th century. This engraving, based on a sketch by M. Lancelot, offers a glimpse into the bustling Entrepot, or Halle aux Vins (Wine Market), located in the heart of the city. The Paris Wine Market was a vast and impressive structure, with a surface area measuring nearly 150,000 yards. Its five sets of constructions, named after the most renowned wine-growing regions in France - Bordeaux-street, Champagne-street, Burgundy-street, Languedoc-street, and Touraine-street - were home to an average of 400,000 to 500,000 casks of wine and spirit. The construction of this colossal building cost the city of Paris an enormous sum of 30,000,000f, but the return for such an investment was relatively small. The scene captured in this image is a symphony of activity. Long wine-carts arrive and depart, octroi men carry out their necessary inspections before the wines can leave, merchants move in and out of their counting-houses, and barrels are rolled about in every direction. The continual comings and goings, the inquisitorial work of the octroi men, and the ever-present smell of alcohol combine to create an exciting and intoxicating atmosphere. This engraving, published in the Illustrated London News in 1860, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing a window into the sights, sounds, and smells of the Paris Wine Market during a time when French wines were becoming increasingly popular in England, thanks to the new treaty. The market's vast size, intricate organization, and the sheer volume of wine and spirit it held made it a significant commercial and cultural hub, and this image serves as a testament to its importance during the 19th century.
