EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic Parish Church of St. Olave in Southwark, London, dating back to 1756. Created by the talented artist Benjamin Cole, this image showcases the architectural beauty of a building that has witnessed centuries of history. Originally dedicated to Olav Haraldsson, an early King of Norway, the church stood on Tooley Street near London Bridge. However, this particular image portrays the structure as it appeared in 1740 after being redesigned by Henry Flitcroft. Its elegant design is a testament to Flitcroft's skill and vision. Tragically, this iconic church suffered extensive damage from a fire in 1843 and was ultimately demolished in 1926. This print serves as a poignant reminder of its former glory and significance within British religious heritage. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth and timelessness to the scene while highlighting intricate details such as arches, windows, and spires that adorned St. Olave's exterior. As you gaze upon this engraving by Benjamin Cole, you are transported back to eighteenth-century England—a country steeped in Christian traditions. Whether you appreciate architectural marvels or have an affinity for historical landmarks like St. Olave's Church, this print offers a glimpse into London's rich cultural tapestry. It is not only a visual delight but also an homage to the enduring power of religion and its impact on society throughout centuries past.
