Pastures, Greenwich, Connecticut, c. 1890-1900. Creator: John Henry Twachtman (American
Pastures, Greenwich, Connecticut, c. 1890-1900. In the mid-1880s a group of American artists joined together to promote the expressive qualities of pastel. As a member of this group, known as the Society of Painters in Pastel, Twachtman contributed actively to their last three exhibitions in 1888, 1889, and 1890. As in this example, Twachtman incorporated the tone of his papers into his imagery, so that the paper becomes a part of the design itself. The most frequent subjects of his pastels were views of the fields and undulating countryside of Greenwich, Connecticut, with gentle rhythms punctuated by occasional trees and patches of wildflowers

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Pastures, Greenwich, Connecticut" transports us back to the late 19th century. Created by renowned American artist John Henry Twachtman, this piece showcases his mastery in pastel artistry and his deep connection with nature. During the mid-1880s, Twachtman was an active member of the Society of Painters in Pastel, a group dedicated to promoting the expressive qualities of this medium. His contributions to their exhibitions were highly regarded and admired. In this particular artwork, Twachtman skillfully incorporates the tone of his papers into the imagery itself, blurring the line between paper and design. The serene landscape depicted here is quintessentially New England - rolling fields and undulating countryside that stretch as far as the eye can see. The gentle rhythms are interrupted only by sporadic trees and patches of wildflowers that add vibrant pops of color to an otherwise tranquil scene. As we gaze upon this timeless masterpiece, we are transported to a simpler time when life moved at a slower pace. We can almost feel ourselves walking through those pastures in Greenwich, Connecticut alongside Twachtman himself. This print captures not just a moment frozen in time but also evokes emotions of nostalgia and appreciation for our natural surroundings. Heritage Art/Heritage Images has beautifully preserved this significant piece from America's artistic heritage for us all to enjoy today.
