The Peace Illuminations - the Royal Exchange, 1856. Creator: Unknown
The Peace Illuminations - the Royal Exchange, 1856. London celebrations to mark the end of the Crimean War. In a fit of old-boyish excitement...the old gentlemen of England determined to make the people "jolly, " to give them a grand spectacle, such as children and savages love, and to immolate the War-demon in the several parks of the metropolis in a shower of rockets and Roman candles, and amid a gush of blue and crimson flame...it was resolved to celebrate the auspicious birthday of the Queen and the inauspicious Treaty of Peace on the same evening...Ten, and probably twenty, thousand pounds worth of gunpowder and other combustibles was thus expended...to teach the people, we suppose, how much more rational and pleasant it is to put gunpowder to such uses than to employ it in the demolition of Russian fortresses, or in the restoration of the equilibrium of Europe'. EDITORS COMMENTS
The Peace Illuminations at the Royal Exchange, 1856: A Grand Celebration of the End of the Crimean War This stunning photograph captures the breathtaking scene of The Peace Illuminations at the Royal Exchange in London, 1856. The image marks the end of the Crimean War, a significant moment in British history, and the people's collective relief and joy at the signing of the Treaty of Peace. In the spirit of old-fashioned excitement, the elderly gentlemen of England decided to put on a grand spectacle for the people. They wanted to create a memorable event, reminiscent of children's delight and savage wonder, and to bid farewell to the War-demon with a spectacular display of fireworks. The decision was made to celebrate Queen Victoria's birthday and the Treaty of Peace on the same evening, creating an unforgettable double celebration. The cost of this magnificent display was estimated to be ten, and possibly twenty, thousand pounds, a significant investment in the people's happiness. The photograph shows the illuminated Royal Exchange building, adorned with banners and flags, against a backdrop of a night sky filled with the vibrant colors of exploding fireworks. The reflection of the lights on the water adds to the ethereal beauty of the scene. The Illustrated London News reported that the people were taught 'how much more rational and pleasant it is to put gunpowder to such uses than to employ it in the demolition of Russian fortresses, or in the restoration of the equilibrium of Europe.' This photograph is a testament to the power of unity, celebration, and the triumph of peace over war.
