Peloton d Arrestation, Paris Commune, 1871
Peloton d Arrestation, Paris Commune, 1871. Cartoon from a series titled Types de la Commune. The Paris Commune was established when the citizens of Paris, many of them armed National Guards, rebelled against the policies of the conservative government formed after the end of the Franco-Prussian War. The left-wing regime of the Commune held sway in Paris for two months until government troops retook the city in bloody fighting in May 1871. The events of the Commune were an inspiration to Karl Marx as well as later communist leaders including Lenin, Trotsky and Mao. From a private collection

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Peloton d Arrestation, Paris Commune, 1871" captures a pivotal moment in history when the citizens of Paris rose up against the conservative government. The image is part of a series called Types de la Commune and depicts a scene from the Paris Commune, which lasted for two months before being brutally suppressed by government troops. In this cartoon-like illustration, we see a peloton - or group - of arresting officers consisting of armed men clad in military uniforms. They are shown apprehending a priest who appears to be expressing anger and resistance. This powerful visual metaphor symbolizes the clash between religion and politics during this tumultuous period. The events of the Paris Commune had far-reaching consequences, inspiring influential figures such as Karl Marx and later communist leaders like Lenin, Trotsky, and Mao. The image serves as a reminder of the revolutionary spirit that swept through France in the late 19th century. This historical artifact provides insight into not only political dynamics but also religious tensions within French society at that time. It highlights how individuals from different backgrounds were united in their fight against oppression. Preserved in private collection today, this vibrant artwork offers us an opportunity to reflect on an important chapter in French history while contemplating themes such as rebellion, law and order, Christianity's role in politics, and societal transformation during times of upheaval.
