Peter of Poitiers Compendium Historiae in Genealogia Christi, c. 1220

Peter of Poitiers " Compendium Historiae in Genealogia Christi", c. 1220. This manuscript roll, composed of four membranes formerly stitched together in a continuous roll about nine feet long, has been divided in the middle for easier visibility and study. The text is an abridgment of biblical history focused on the descent of Christ from Adam. It was written by Peter of Poitiers (about 1130-1205), who taught theology and history in Paris and was widely copied. The present roll is an English copy of Peters text made shortly after his death. Although manuscript rolls were hung on the walls of a classroom as instructional aids to students, some of them have value beyond their textual and historical interest because of the fine quality of their drawings, as seen here. A comparison with Canterbury manuscripts and stained glass of around 1220 is the basis for the attribution to Canterbury. Peter of Poitierss aim in this project was to assist students prevented from mastering biblical history because of its length and because they were too poor to own books

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of medieval history, the "Peter of Poitiers Compendium Historiae in Genealogia Christi" manuscript roll. Created around 1220, this manuscript roll consists of four membranes stitched together to form a continuous nine-foot-long scroll. To facilitate visibility and study, it has been divided in the middle. The text within this manuscript is an abridged version of biblical history with a specific focus on tracing the lineage of Christ from Adam. Penned by Peter of Poitiers (1130-1205), a renowned theologian and historian who taught in Paris, this work gained widespread popularity and was extensively copied. While these rolls were primarily used as instructional aids for students and hung on classroom walls, some manuscripts like this one possess exceptional artistic value. The exquisite quality of drawings seen here sets them apart. Scholars attribute its creation to Canterbury based on comparisons with manuscripts and stained glass from around 1220. Peter of Poitiers embarked upon this project with the intention to assist students who struggled with mastering biblical history due to its length or lack of access to books caused by poverty.
