EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Peterborough Cathedral in Cambridgeshire, captured by artist WL Walton around 1870. The cathedral, consecrated in 1238, stands as a testament to the devotion of Saints Peter, Paul, and Andrew. Its grandeur is accentuated by statues of these saints adorning the three gables on its west front. Steeped in history, this iconic structure holds significant importance within British royalty. It served as the final resting place for two Tudor Queens of England - Catherine of Aragon and Mary Queen of Scots (although Mary was later reburied at Westminster Abbey). However, not all chapters in its history were peaceful. During the English Civil War in 1643, Cromwell's troops vandalized the interior of this sacred space. Despite such trials and tribulations throughout centuries past, Peterborough Cathedral has remained resilient. The photograph beautifully captures both the exterior splendor and architectural brilliance that characterizes this medieval masterpiece. Its Gothic design stands tall against an idyllic backdrop showcasing rural England. Preserved through time with meticulous detail by WL Walton's lithograph technique, this print allows us to appreciate the intricate craftsmanship that went into constructing such a remarkable religious edifice during the thirteenth century. As we gaze upon this image from Heritage Images' collection curated by The Print Collector29 and Hanhart (not affiliated with any commercial use), we are transported back to a different era - one where faith intertwined with artistry to create awe-inspiring structures like Peterborough Cathedral.
