Pewter container, c1300, (1881). Creator: M Sullivan
Pewter container, c1300, (1881). Etching of a pyx (container for storing consecrated bread used in the catholic mass) or salt cellar, made in England in the early 14th century. The box is hexagonal in shape and stands on three feet. The hinged lid is decorated in relief with the Annunciation, and the arms of France and England as used before 1340. There is a religious inscription in Latin round the edge of the upper section, and the finial is in the form of a seated hound. From " The South Kensington Museum", a book of engraved illustrations, with descriptions, of the works of art in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum). [Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, London, 1881]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable pewter container dating back to the 14th century. Created by M Sullivan in 1881, this etching captures an exquisite pyx or salt cellar from England's early medieval period. The hexagonal-shaped box stands on three delicate feet, while its hinged lid is adorned with intricate relief work depicting the Annunciation and the arms of France and England as they were used before 1340. The upper section of the container features a religious inscription in Latin, adding to its ecclesiastical significance. A seated hound serves as the finial, completing this stunning piece of craftsmanship. This photograph comes from "The South Kensington Museum" a book that beautifully illustrates and describes various works of art housed at what is now known as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. With its rich historical context and meticulous attention to detail, this artifact offers us a glimpse into medieval England's artistic prowess and religious practices. It serves as a testament to both Christian devotion during that era and the skillful metalwork techniques employed by craftsmen of the time. M Sullivan's print allows us to appreciate not only the beauty but also the cultural significance of this pewter container—a true treasure preserved for generations at one of London's most renowned museums.
