EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the esteemed artist and Royal Academician, Philip Hermogenes Calderon, in 1882. Calderon's distinguished career began with a study of engineering before he ultimately decided to pursue his passion for painting. His talent was recognized early on when he exhibited at the prestigious Royal Academy in 1853. In 1867, he achieved the honor of becoming a Royal Academician and later went on to be appointed as the Keeper of the Royal Academy in 1887. The photograph is part of "Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits" which showcases notable figures from various fields such as politics, religion, science, literature, art, military service, law, and medicine. Taken by Lock & Whitfield photographers from life itself, this portrait provides an intimate glimpse into Calderon's appearance during the Victorian era. Calderon's bald head and full beard exude an air of wisdom and experience that complement his artistic profession. Dressed impeccably with an accessory tie adding a touch of sophistication to his attire; it is evident that Calderon takes pride in his appearance as much as he does in his craft. This monochrome image serves as a testament to both Calderon's individual achievements within British society and his contribution to the arts during the nineteenth century. The print collector has preserved this significant moment in history for future generations to appreciate and admire one of Britain's most celebrated artists
