Picking up the Atlantic cable, 1866 (c1880)
Picking up the Atlantic cable, 1866 (c1880). An attempt in 1865 by Brunels giant steamship, the Great Eastern to lay a transatlantic telegraph cable ended in failure when the cable snapped and the end was lost. The following year the Great Eastern succeeded in retrieving the lost cable and completing it, connecting Valentia in Ireland to Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. Instead of the length of a sea voyage, communication time between the two sides of the Atlantic became a matter of seconds. A print from Cassells History of the United States, by Edmund Ollier, Volume III, Cassell Petter and Galpin, London, c1880

Picking up the Atlantic Cable, 1866 (c1880) - A Triumph of Transatlantic Communication
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a momentous achievement in the history of communication. In 1865, Isambard Kingdom Brunel's colossal steamship, the Great Eastern, embarked on an ambitious mission to lay a transatlantic telegraph cable. However, this initial endeavor ended in disappointment as the cable snapped and disappeared into the depths of the ocean. Undeterred by failure, Brunel and his team persevered. The following year saw a remarkable feat as they successfully retrieved and completed the lost cable. This monumental accomplishment connected Valentia in Ireland to Trinity Bay in Newfoundland, revolutionizing communication between Europe and North America. The significance of this event cannot be overstated. What was once a lengthy sea voyage for information exchange now became a matter of mere seconds. The image showcases not only technological progress but also human determination and ingenuity. As we gaze upon this engraving from Cassells History of the United States by Edmund Ollier, we are transported back to that transformative era when boundaries were shattered by technology. It serves as a reminder that even amidst setbacks, success can be achieved through perseverance. Let us celebrate this extraordinary milestone in transatlantic communications—a testament to human achievement that forever changed our world.
