Pifferari, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Pifferari, [in Rome], 1850. Scene depicting The appearance of the peasant minstrels (The Pifferari), whose strains form the very simple, but heart-stirring "Christmas Carol" of Rome...They are Calabrian shepherds, who come down from their highland homes at Christmas, and on their national instruments, a sort of small clarionet and bagpipe, perform their wild but harmonious native airs, before the various representations of the Madonna and Child which are scattered in every direction through the city. They generally remain in Rome from ten days to a fortnight; after which they disappear...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
Pifferari" and dated 1850, depicts a scene of Calabrian shepherds, known as Pifferari, performing in the streets of Rome during the Christmas season. These itinerant musicians, originating from the highlands of Calabria, Italy, would travel to the city to share their native music with the people. The Pifferari are seen here playing their traditional instruments, a small clarinet and a bagpipe, before various representations of the Madonna and Child that were scattered throughout the city. The image captures the raw energy and emotion of their music, which was simple yet heart-stirring, and added to the festive atmosphere of the season. The Pifferari were a common sight in Rome during the Victorian era, and their presence was eagerly anticipated by the locals. They would remain in the city for ten days to two weeks before disappearing back into the countryside. This photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, provides a glimpse into the rich cultural traditions of Italy during the 19th century. The scene is reminiscent of a simpler time, where music and faith brought people together to celebrate the joy of the Christmas season." This photograph is a beautiful example of the artistic and cultural exchange that took place during the Victorian era. It captures the essence of the Pifferari's music, which was a unique blend of Italian and Calabrian influences, and showcases the importance of music and religion in the daily lives of the people of Rome. The image also highlights the role of the press in documenting and preserving these cultural traditions for future generations.
