Pinback button for the Black National Political Convention, mid 20th century
The National Black Political Convention, or the Gary Convention, was held in Gary, Indiana in 1972, and provided a space for African-Americans to discuss issues adversely affecting their communities. Among the goals was increasing political representation and raising the number of Black politicians elected to office. It stated that the American political system was failing Black Americans and that the only way to address this problem was to transition to independent black politics. The black button has green and red text which reads [BLACK / NATIONAL / POLITICAL / CONVENTION / MAR. 10, 11, 12, 1972 / GARY, IND.] The word " NATIONAL" is in red, and the rest of the words are green. The back is silver and has a wire pin. There is engraved text on the back which reads [MADE IN U.S.A. / (?) PEND.]. There is a symbol of a circle with an upward arrow going through it. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a pinback button that holds immense historical significance. Created for the Black National Political Convention, also known as the Gary Convention, this button represents a pivotal moment in African-American history during the mid-20th century. Held in Gary, Indiana in 1972, this convention provided a crucial platform for African-Americans to address and discuss issues plaguing their communities. The primary aim of the convention was to increase political representation and elevate the number of Black politicians elected to office. In response to significant economic and social crises faced by Black Americans at that time, the attendees issued the groundbreaking Gary Declaration. This declaration boldly stated that the American political system had failed Black Americans and emphasized the urgent need for independent black politics. The pinback button itself is striking with its vibrant green and red text against a silver background. The words "BLACK / NATIONAL / POLITICAL / CONVENTION / MAR. 10,11,12,1972 / GARY IND" are prominently displayed on it. Notably, "NATIONAL" stands out in red while all other words are rendered in green. This particular piece belonged to Jan Bailey (1942-2010), an individual who recognized its historical value and preserved it throughout her lifetime. With its engraved text on the back stating "MADE IN U. S. A" along with an intriguing symbol of a circle intersected by an upward arrow, this pinback button serves as both a tangible reminder of past struggles and aspirations for change within African-American communities.
