EDITORS COMMENTS
Image 1 of 5: Piruz Advises Nushzad not to Rebel against Anushirvan (c1560) This exquisite 16th-century painting, of unknown origin, depicts a pivotal moment from the epic poem "Shahnameh" or "The Book of Kings," written by the Persian poet Ferdowsi between 977 and 1010 CE. The scene illustrates the advice given by Piruz, the wise vizier of King Anushirvan (Chosroes I or Khusrau Anushirvan), to his son Nushzad, who is shown on horseback, surrounded by a crowd of advisors and men waving banners and flags. The opaque watercolor, heightened with gold and silver on paper, captures the rich details of the Persian court. Piruz, an elderly man with a long white beard, sits on a horse and speaks earnestly to Nushzad, who looks thoughtful and determined. The natural setting, with its lush greenery and vibrant colors, adds to the serene atmosphere of the scene. The epic poem "Shahnameh" is a cornerstone of Persian literature and history, and its themes of loyalty, justice, and the struggle between good and evil have resonated with generations of readers. This painting, with its intricate details and beautiful use of color, offers a glimpse into the rich artistic and cultural heritage of the Middle East during the 1560s. The painting is currently housed in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where it is a testament to the enduring power of art and literature to transport us to another time and place.
