Placket, late 1800s. Creator: Unknown

Placket, late 1800s. In the 1800s, native peoples began to use European fabrics to fashion fine formal garments; they favored sturdy cloth, such as velvet and wool broadcloth, which provided support for heavy decorative beadwork that was added by hand. Often the fabric was a dark colour, providing dramatic contrast for the multicoloured beads. Rather than encrusting the entire garment, beadwork was confined to cuffs, " epaulettes, " bib-like plackets and yokes, rectangular panels sewn to leggings, shirts, and dresses, and the like

Cotton Cree Garment Ojibwe Velvet Anishinaabe Great Lakes Region

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Placket from the late 1800s, an exquisite example of Native American craftsmanship. Created by an unknown artist, this garment reflects the cultural fusion that occurred during this era when native peoples began incorporating European fabrics into their traditional attire. The Placket is made from sturdy materials like velvet and wool broadcloth, chosen for their ability to support the intricate beadwork that adorns it. The dark-colored fabric provides a striking contrast to the vibrant multicolored beads meticulously hand-sewn onto it. Rather than covering the entire garment, these stunning beadwork designs are strategically placed on cuffs, epaulettes, bib-like plackets and yokes, as well as rectangular panels sewn onto leggings, shirts, and dresses. Representing Anishinaabe (Ojibwe or Nehiyawak) heritage art from the Great Lakes region in Northeast Woodlands culture, this Placket is a testament to both artistic skill and cultural identity. It serves as a tangible link between past generations and present-day appreciation for indigenous traditions. Preserved within The Cleveland Museum of Art's collection under Heritage Art/Heritage Images' care, this remarkable piece invites us to marvel at its beauty while honoring the rich history behind it. As we admire its intricate details and impeccable craftsmanship captured in this print by Heritage Images' lens - let us remember not only its aesthetic value but also acknowledge its significance in preserving our shared human heritage.
