EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a plan depicting the extent of the devastating Great Fire in Cornhill, London, in 1748. The map highlights the areas affected by the fire on March 25th of that year, revealing houses greatly scorched and one particular house catching fire twice. The fire originated at Mr Eldridge's establishment, a Perriwig-Maker located in Exchange-Alley, Cornhill. Approximately 80-100 homes were destroyed as a result of this catastrophic event. In response to this disaster, several building acts were subsequently passed to enhance fire safety measures and make buildings less susceptible to such incidents. The image is sourced from "Old and New London, Vol. II: A Narrative of Its History, Its People, and Its Places" written by Walter Thornbury. Published by Cassell, Petter & Galpin Co. , this publication provides an insightful account of London's past. This print not only offers us a glimpse into the ravages caused by the Great Fire but also serves as a reminder of how legislation was shaped to prioritize public health and safety during that era.
