Portion of the Horseshoe Falls, Niagara - from a photograph by the Stereoscopic Company, 1860. The Canadian cataract rolls over a precipice projecting about fifty feet beyond its base, and the falling waters form a curve, between which and the rock itself persons may proceed thirty or forty yards. This is called the Horseshoe Fall. Below the Falls the river flows with considerable rapidity between banks from 200 to 300 feet high. These banks are perpendicular for about half their descent, but towards the base they form a slope composed of the fragments which have fallen from above'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

This photograph, taken by the Stereoscopic Company in 1860, showcases a mesmerizing portion of the Horseshoe Falls in Niagara, Canada. The Horseshoe Fall, a natural wonder and a significant geographical feature, is renowned for its distinctive horseshoe shape and the awe-inspiring sight of water cascading over a cliff that projects about fifty feet beyond its base. The curve formed by the falling waters and the rock itself allows visitors to approach and marvel at the spectacle from a relatively close distance, about thirty to forty yards. Below the falls, the Niagara River flows with considerable rapidity, its banks towering between 200 to 300 feet high. The cliffs are predominantly perpendicular for about half their descent, but towards the base, they form a gentle slope composed of the fragments that have fallen from above. This scene, as described in the "Illustrated London News" in 1860, has long drawn tourists from around the world, offering a dramatic day out and an unforgettable experience. The black and white image, reminiscent of the 19th century, transports us back in time and invites us to imagine the thrill and wonder that early travelers must have felt as they witnessed this natural marvel. The Horseshoe Falls, a testament to the power and beauty of nature, continues to captivate and inspire visitors, drawing them to the shores of Niagara for a day trip or an extended stay. This photograph, a precious piece of history, offers us a glimpse into the past and a reminder of the enduring allure of this iconic tourist attraction.
