EDITORS COMMENTS
This full-length portrait depicts a young boy, believed to be Louis of Nassau (1604-1620), an illegitimate son of Prince Maurice of Nassau and his mistress Agnes of Hesse. The portrait, dating back to the seventeenth century, is an exquisite example of Dutch aristocratic fashion and artistry. The little boy is dressed in an elegant red and white doublet, adorned with gold buttons and a collar, and a matching pair of hose. He wears a white ruff at his neck and a small cap on his head. In his left hand, he holds a golden medal, possibly a symbol of his noble heritage. Surrounding the boy is an abundance of cherries, a popular motif in Dutch still life paintings of the time. Two birds, a parrot and a pheasant, perch on the branches of a tree behind him, adding a playful and whimsical touch to the portrait. The rich colors and intricate details of the painting, executed in oil on panel, evoke a sense of opulence and grandeur. The portrait, currently housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, offers a glimpse into the life of a young aristocratic boy in the Netherlands during the seventeenth century. The combination of the historical significance, the beautiful clothing, and the charming presence of the cherries and birds make this portrait a true treasure of European heritage art.
