EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 18th century portrait captures the regal presence of Maria Theresa, the Archduchess of Austria, sovereign of the Habsburg dominions, and Holy Roman Empress. Born in 1717, Maria Theresa ruled an extensive territory that included Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Bohemia, Transylvania, Mantua, Milan, Galicia and Lodomeria, the Austrian Netherlands, and Parma. She was also Duchess of Lorraine and Grand Duchess of Tuscany. Maria Theresa is depicted in this portrait wearing the elaborate attire of the time, with a richly colored and intricately patterned dress adorned with ermine fur. The high collar and voluminous sleeves are typical of the fashion of the era, as is the elaborate hairstyle, which is held in place with a large, ornate cushion. The portrait was created by Paul Friedrich Engelbrecht, a renowned German engraver and etcher of the time. Engelbrecht skillfully captured the essence of Maria Theresa's power and grace, as evidenced by the confident and regal expression on her face. The portrait also features an inscription in Latin, which identifies the subject as "Her Royal Highness Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria, Holy Roman Empress." The portrait provides a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the 18th century, as well as the political and cultural heritage of Europe during this period. It is a testament to the enduring power and influence of the Habsburg dynasty, and a reminder of the rich artistic traditions of Germany and the Low Countries during this time.
