Portrait of Philippus Baldaeus and Gerrit Mossopotam, 1668. Creator: Johan De La Rocquette

Portrait of Philippus Baldaeus and Gerrit Mossopotam, 1668.
Philippus Baldaeus was active as a minister for the VOC on Ceylon (Sri Lanka) from 1654 to 1665. Back in the Netherlands, he had this picture painted to commemorate his years of service overseas. The seated Baldaeus wears clothing he brought with him from Asia. He is probably joined here by Gerrit Mossopotam, who resided with Baldaeus in the Netherlands and may have assisted him in translating Christian texts

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait, painted by Johan De La Rocquette in 1668, depicts Philippus Baldaeus, a Dutch minister who served the Dutch East India Company (VOC) on the island of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) from 1654 to 1665. The portrait commemorates Baldaeus's years of service overseas. Baldaeus is seated in the portrait, dressed in clothing he brought back from Asia. He is likely joined by Gerrit Mossopotam, who resided with Baldaeus in the Netherlands and may have assisted him in translating Christian texts. The painting is a double portrait, showcasing both men in seventeenth-century attire. The landscape in the background, with its lush greenery and animals, adds to the exotic and adventurous atmosphere of the scene. The oil on canvas painting, with its rich colors and intricate details, is a testament to the artistic heritage of the Low Countries and the cultural exchange between Europe and Asia during this period. The portrait is now on display at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, inviting visitors to explore the history and fashion of the seventeenth century, as well as the lives of these two intriguing figures.
