EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite portrait depicts William VIII, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel (1682-1760), a prominent figure of the first third of the 18th century in Germany. Painted by Hermann Hendrik Quiter the Younger (active 1700-1731), this oil on canvas masterpiece is a prime example of the Rococo style that dominated European art during this period. William VIII, also known as Wilhelm IX, ruled the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel from 1730 until his death in 1760. He was the eldest son of William VII, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel, and his wife, Princess Hedwig Sophia of Brandenburg-Bayreuth. This portrait, created around 1715, captures the young Landgrave in his prime, with an air of confidence and sophistication. Quiter the Younger was a renowned German painter of the early 18th century, known for his portraits and genre scenes. His skillful use of light and color, as well as his ability to capture the essence of his subjects, is evident in this stunning portrait of William VIII. The artist expertly renders the Landgrave's rich attire, complete with a velvet coat, lace cuffs, and a sash adorned with the Order of the Golden Lion, the heraldic symbol of Hesse-Kassel. This portrait once hung in the royal collection of the Wawel Castle in Krakow, Poland, before finding its current home in the Royal Castle in Warsaw. Today, it serves as a testament to the artistic prowess of Hermann Hendrik Quiter the Younger and the regal legacy of William VIII, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel.
