Presentation of Colours to the Cambridgeshire Militia, at Ely, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Presentation of Colours to the Cambridgeshire Militia, at Ely, 1854. A platform was erected, covered with crimson cloth, on Palace Green just opposite the Cathedral, from where the Countess of Hardwicke presented the Colours to the Cambridgeshire Militia, previous to their leaving for Ireland....the Countess rose from her seat and, advancing towards the edge, supported by the Earl on one side and her daughters on the other, read an eloquent address: I present you with these Colours - I call upon you to follow them - for doubtless, in the hands of such officers, they will lead you to the path of glory! To respect them - because, in this favoured land, they represent honour, order, and freedom! And to die for them, if necessary, in defence of your most beloved Queen and country. I now wish you a heartfelt farewell. And may God bless, direct, and prosper the Cambridgeshire Militia'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment of the Presentation of Colours to the Cambridgeshire Militia, which took place on Palace Green in Ely, Cambridgeshire, in 1854. The scene is set with a platform, draped in crimson cloth, erected near the Cathedral, where the Countess of Hardwicke, resplendent in her finery, presents the Colours to the assembled militiamen. The Countess, supported by her husband, the Earl, and her daughters, delivers a stirring address to the troops, urging them to follow the Colours to the path of glory, respect them as symbols of honour, order, and freedom, and if necessary, to die for their beloved Queen and country. The soldiers, in turn, pledge their loyalty and devotion to their commanding officer and the Colours they now proudly bear. This poignant moment marked the departure of the Cambridgeshire Militia for Ireland, where they were to serve in the British Army. The image, published in the Illustrated London News in 1854, captures the spirit of duty, loyalty, and sacrifice that defined the militia forces of the time.
