EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment of the Presentation of Colours to the Victoria Rifles in Montreal, Canada, in 1862. The Victoria Rifles, a volunteer corps formed by local businessmen, merchants, and professionals, drilled diligently in anticipation of potential war with the United States. The colours, intricately designed and created by Montreal ladies, were presented on the city's cricket ground, which had been decorated for the occasion. The ceremony was officiated by the Lord Bishop of Montreal, Metropolitan, with Sir Fenwick Williams of Kars presenting the colours on behalf of the ladies. After the presentation, the brigade proudly marched past the largest gathering ever seen for a volunteer parade in Canada. This engraving, taken from a photograph by Mr. Notman, is a testament to the patriotism and unity of Montrealers during a time of heightened tensions.
