Princess Charlotte, 19th century. Artist: W Fry

Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales, 19th century. The princess (1796-1817) was the only child of the marriage between George IV and Caroline of Brunswick. After giving birth to a stillborn son, she died of post-partum haemorrhage and shock. The royal obstetrician, Sir Richard Croft, who had failed to use forceps during the labour, committed suicide. The public outpouring of grief at the loss of the popular princess was not matched until the death of Princess Diana in 1997

EDITORS COMMENTS
Princess Charlotte, a Captivating Portrait of Tragedy and Loss". This print showcases Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales, a prominent figure in the 19th century. Born in 1796 to George IV and Caroline of Brunswick, she was the sole child from their tumultuous marriage. Unfortunately, her life was marred by heartbreak and tragedy. The image captures Princess Charlotte's delicate features, revealing her regal poise and grace. However, behind this serene facade lies a haunting tale of sorrow. After enduring the devastating loss of a stillborn son during childbirth, Princess Charlotte succumbed to post-partum hemorrhage and shock at just twenty-one years old. The tragic circumstances surrounding her death were further compounded by the suicide of Sir Richard Croft, the royal obstetrician who had failed to employ forceps during labor. The nation was consumed with grief over losing such a beloved princess; an outpouring not witnessed until the untimely demise of Princess Diana in 1997. This engraving serves as both a historical artifact and an artistic tribute to Princess Charlotte's memory. It immortalizes her beauty while reminding us of the fragility that can accompany royalty. As we gaze upon this portrait today, let us reflect on the profound impact she had on British society during her short but impactful life.
