In the Prison Infirmary, 1906-1911. Creator: Isaiah Aronovich Shinkman
In the Prison Infirmary, 1906-1911. This photograph is from an album of 47 views of convicts and structures at the Akatuy Prison, one of the main centers where political prisoners were held in the Russian Empire during the late-tsarist period. The album belonged to Isaiah Aronovich Shinkman, a physician and member of the Socialist Revolutionary Party, who was incarcerated at Akatuy from 1906 to 1911. The prison was located at the Akatuy silver mine in Nerchinsk okrug (district) in the Transbaikal Territory of Siberia. Thousands of political prisoners were exiled to Siberia from European Russia and from Poland, Finland, Latvia, and Estonia (all then part of the Russian Empire) following the repression of the Russian Revolution of 1905. Criminal labor convicts and political prisoners had long been sent to Nerchinsk to work in extracting lead-silver ores in the region's mines. Irkutsk State University

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a haunting photograph taken by Isaiah Aronovich Shinkman during his imprisonment at the Akatuy Prison in Nerchinsk okrug, Transbaikal Territory, Russia. The image is part of a collection of 47 views of convicts and structures at the prison, which served as a major center for holding political prisoners in the late-tsarist period. Thousands of individuals were exiled to Siberia from European Russia and territories such as Poland, Finland, Latvia, and Estonia following the repression of the Russian Revolution of 1905. The photograph depicts a group of men seated inside the prison infirmary. Some of the men appear to be undergoing medical examinations, while others are simply resting. A guard stands watch with a rifle at the ready, adding an air of tension to the scene. The men wear tattered clothing and have exhausted expressions on their faces, reflecting the harsh conditions they endured. Isaiah Aronovich Shinkman, the photographer, was a physician and member of the Socialist Revolutionary Party. He was incarcerated at Akatuy from 1906 to 1911. The prison was located near the Akatuy silver mine, where criminal labor convicts and political prisoners had long been sent to work. This photograph provides a glimpse into the lives of the men held at Akatuy Prison during a turbulent time in Russian history. It is a poignant reminder of the human cost of political repression and the harsh realities of life in a Siberian prison. The image is a valuable historical artifact, shedding light on the experiences of political prisoners during the late-tsarist period and the use of prison labor in Russia's mining industry.
