Louis-Victor Freret...The horse introduced is modelled by Mr. McCarthy. It consists of a group, exquisitely wrought in silver, disposed upon a ground of bronze, and a large ebony pedestal. The incident represented is Robin Hood contending for the golden arrow at the great archery fete given by the Sheriff of Nottingham, with the view of attracting the great outlaw from his stronghold...The sheriff is mounted on horseback, superintending the game. The other figures are Robin, in the act of discharging his successful arrow, and Little John, who is in a bending posture, watching the progress of the game, his quiver and arrows having been thrown down beside him. Two Scottish greyhounds form interesting companions to the archers'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This Prize Plate, showcased in the Goodwood Races of 1850, is a stunning testament to the rich history of horse racing and mythology. The intricately crafted plate, of unknown origin, was manufactured by Charles Frederick Hancock after a design by the renowned French artist, Louis-Victor Freret. The centerpiece of the plate depicts an archery scene inspired by the legend of Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham. Robin Hood, the mythical figure, is shown in the act of releasing a successful arrow towards the great archery fete's golden arrow, while Little John, his loyal companion, watches intently with his quiver and arrows discarded beside him. The Sheriff, mounted on horseback, supervises the game from atop his steed. Two Scottish greyhounds add to the scene's charm and energy. The plate, a beautiful blend of silver and bronze, is set atop a large ebony pedestal. It was first introduced to the public through the pages of the Illustrated London News in 1850. The detailed engraving, expertly executed by Hancock and his team, captures the essence of the legendary tale and the spirit of the sporting event. This Prize Plate, a remarkable piece from the Victorian era, is a treasure trove of history, art, and mythology. It stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of Robin Hood's story and the thrill of archery and horse racing, both popular pastimes during the 19th century.
