EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic PS Princess Elizabeth, a paddle steamer that graced the waters in the 1920s. Created by Kirk & Sons of Cowes, this vessel was originally equipped with a short black and white funnel, which was later replaced with a taller one. Serving as an integral part of ferry services between Southampton and Southsea to the Isle of Wight before World War II, it played a significant role during Operation Dynamo in May 1940. During this critical operation, PS Princess Elizabeth joined forces with numerous Little Ships to sail towards Dunkirk and rescue stranded Allied soldiers. Across four courageous crossings, it successfully saved an astounding total of 1673 brave servicemen. This historic event solidified its place in maritime history as a symbol of resilience and heroism. The monochrome composition adds depth to this image captured by Arthur Henry Kirk and Edgar WP Kirk. The ship's billowing smoke against the backdrop of serene waters evokes nostalgia for an era when steamships were at their prime. A testament to British engineering prowess, PS Princess Elizabeth represents both transportation innovation and national pride. Preserved through time by William Umpleby Kirk's remarkable craftsmanship behind the lens, this photograph serves as a visual portal into early 20th-century Britain—a reminder of our rich maritime heritage that continues to captivate generations today.
