EDITORS COMMENTS
The Queen's Reception in Hyde Park, London, c1840s (1900)". This print captures a significant moment in history - the reception held for Queen Victoria in Hyde Park following three attempts on her life. The year was somewhere between 1840 and 1842 when Edward Oxford, John Francis, or John William Bean tried to assassinate the beloved monarch. In this image from "The life and times of Queen Victoria" by Robert Wilson, we see a scene filled with relief and gratitude. The queen is seated elegantly atop a majestic horse, surrounded by an entourage of postilions and riders. Her presence exudes strength and resilience as she acknowledges the support of her loyal subjects. The crowd gathered around Hyde Park reflects both curiosity and admiration for their sovereign. Women donning bonnets stand alongside men wearing top hats, all united in their devotion to the queen. Horses play a crucial role in this historic event as they transport royalty through the park's pathways. The attire worn by those present showcases the fashion trends of Victorian Britain during that era. From the elaborate dresses worn by women to the formal suits adorning men, every detail speaks volumes about societal norms at that time. This engraving serves as a reminder of Queen Victoria's indomitable spirit amidst adversity while highlighting her enduring popularity among her people. It immortalizes not only an important historical event but also pays tribute to those who safeguarded their beloved monarch from harm's way.
