The Queen's Visit to Birmingham - Arrival of Her Majesty at Stoneleigh Abbey, 1858. Creator: Unknown
The Queen's Visit to Birmingham - Arrival of Her Majesty at Stoneleigh Abbey, 1858. There are few who require to be told what a fine baronial residence is this old abbey, once the well-chosen retreat of a community of Cistercian monks, and now the family seat of Lord Leigh, one of the most amiable and popular noblemen in the midland counties... Passing under a triumphal arch...the Royal cortege passed on to the Abbey, which was reached punctually at half-past six. The Royal visitors were received at the entrance to the Abbey by Lord and Lady Leigh, the Dowager Lady Leigh, &c...Immediately on her Majesty's arrival a Royal salute was fired by sixty members of the Artillery...a fine Royal standard of England (in every respect similar to that at Buckingham Palace) was hoisted over the Abbey in the place of a Union Jack...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic moment of Queen Victoria's visit to Birmingham, specifically her arrival at the magnificent Stoneleigh Abbey in 1858. The image transports us back in time, offering a glimpse into the grandeur and elegance of a bygone era. Stoneleigh Abbey, a fine example of a baronial residence, once served as the tranquil retreat for a community of Cistercian monks. Now, it stands proudly as the family seat of Lord Leigh, a beloved and esteemed nobleman in the midland counties. As the Queen approached Stoneleigh Abbey, she passed under a triumphal arch, marking the beginning of her official welcome. The Royal cortege arrived at the Abbey punctually at half-past six, and upon her Majesty's arrival, a Royal salute was fired by sixty members of the Artillery. A fine Royal standard of England, identical to that at Buckingham Palace, was hoisted over the Abbey in place of the Union Jack, signifying the Queen's presence. Lord and Lady Leigh, along with the Dowager Lady Leigh and other dignitaries, warmly welcomed Her Majesty, marking the beginning of a memorable visit to Birmingham. This photograph, taken from the pages of the Illustrated London News in 1858, offers a rare and intriguing look into the regal visit of Queen Victoria to Stoneleigh Abbey, a moment in history that continues to captivate and inspire.
