Raga Gandhara, 1650-75. Creator: Unknown
Raga Gandhara, 1650-75. A gaunt ascetic with protruding ribs sits on a tiger skin as a disciple carrying a pouch approaches. With legs contorted into a complex posture, the seated yogi has engaged in such prolonged physical discipline as to appear androgynous. The jewelry adorning the emaciated body, however, identifies the figure as female. With loose hair that grows unchecked, she has removed herself from mainstream society in order to build yogic power through her austere practices. A fire burns before her; behind her, at the base of the trident holding a peacock-feather fan, a pot contains ashes, which she smears on her forehead to mark herself as a devotee of the god Shiva. In stark contrast to the ascetic woman's withered body, the river and tree near which she sits brim with life

EDITORS COMMENTS
Raga Gandhara: A 17th Century Yogini in Meditative Contemplation This evocative image, titled Raga Gandhara, dates back to the 1650s-70s and showcases an enigmatic yogini in deep meditation. The creator of this artwork remains unknown, but it is believed to originate from the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh, India. The ascetic woman, depicted as gaunt and androgynous, sits on a tiger skin with her legs contorted in a complex posture. Her emaciated body is adorned with intricate jewelry, yet her long, unkempt hair and the absence of societal adornments suggest her seclusion from the mainstream. A fire burns before her, a pot containing ashes at her side, and she smears the ashes on her forehead as a mark of devotion to Lord Shiva. In contrast to her withered form, the vibrant river and tree near her brim with life, symbolizing the harmony between the spiritual and the natural world. The young woman's disciple, dressed in simple robes, approaches with a pouch, possibly carrying offerings. The tranquil night sky, with its opaque watercolor and gold accents, adds to the serene atmosphere. This painting, executed in the style of opaque watercolor and gold on paper, is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of Hindustan and the enduring influence of Hinduism on Indian culture. The title 'Raga Gandhara' is believed to refer to a melodic scale used in Indian classical music, symbolizing the harmony and balance that the yogini embodies in her spiritual practices.
