The Railway Station, Arica, Peru, 1865. Creator: Unknown
The Railway Station, Arica, Peru, 1865. View from a sketch by Mr. J. N. Dutton '...of H.M.S. Shearwater, when lying in that harbour of the Pacific coast. [The view] includes the railway station and workshops of the line running to Tacua, a city about forty miles inland. The station is the first building on the right; the centre buildings, which stand on the other side of the line, are flour-mills; the workshop is the farthest building on the left; and the building which is seen at the back of the View is one which stands in the cemetery of Arica, on the Zapa plain. The Zapa valley is very pretty, the green bushes making an agreeable contrast with the sandy hills which surround them. The trees in the foreground are chiefly cotton. It is a very pleasant walk along the line with this rare verdure on each side. About a quarter of a mile to the left of the station is the Water Battery, a battery of three guns, one of which is a large 16-inch American gun, and the ether two 32-pounders. Altogether, the place is tolerably well fortified; and the fort on the hill commands the entire town, so that it would be difficult to land hostile troops without a considerable loss'. EDITORS COMMENTS
**A Glimpse of Peruvian Railways in the Late 19th Century**
This photograph print, taken in Arica, Peru around 1865, offers a rare glimpse into the country's railway infrastructure during its early years. The image shows the Railway Station and workshops of the line running to Tacua, a city approximately forty miles inland. Located on the Pacific coast, this station was an important hub for trade and commerce.
The photograph captures various structures along the tracks, including flour-mills in the center and workshops further left. In contrast to the dry desert landscape surrounding Arica, lush green bushes create a picturesque scene within the Zapa valley. The foreground features cotton trees lining the railway line, making it an inviting spot for leisurely strolls.
Notably, this image also highlights military fortifications around Arica town. A water battery with three guns - including one massive 16-inch American gun and two 32-pounders - is situated about a quarter of a mile to the left of the station. The hilltop fort commands the entire city, making it difficult for hostile forces to land without suffering significant losses.
This photograph offers an intriguing snapshot into Peru's railway history during its formative years, showcasing both industrial development and military preparedness in this Pacific coastal town.
