Reception of Her Majesty at the Great Central Railway Station, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, 1850. Creator: Ebenezer Landells

Reception of Her Majesty at the Great Central Railway Station, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, 1850. Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and children are greeted by dignitaries at the station...which her Majesty formally opened. This station is made up in breadth by three arches, supported throughout on light iron pillars, the roof of open ironwork, well lighted, loftier than such structures usually are, and the whole building being unusually airy and graceful. The entire available space within this splendid shedding was occupied by the inhabitants of Newcastle, who assembled in great force to give their Sovereign a true north-country welcome....A wide space on the platform was kept clear for the ceremony of her Majesty's reception by a guard of honour, consisting of a detachment of the 33rd Regiment of Foot, attended by the regimental band, under the command of Captain Mundy'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph, captured by renowned English photographer Ebenezer Landells in 1850, depicts the historic reception of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert at the newly opened Great Central Railway Station in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. The station, which her Majesty formally opened, is a grand architectural marvel, boasting three arches supported by light iron pillars and an open ironwork roof, creating a spacious, airy, and graceful building. The crowd of excited onlookers, comprised of the citizens of Newcastle, eagerly assembled to welcome their Sovereign with a true north-country welcome. The platform was meticulously prepared for the royal ceremony, with a wide clearance maintained for the reception by a guard of honor. The 33rd Regiment of Foot, under the command of Captain Mundy, stood proudly at attention, accompanied by their regimental band. The Queen, resplendent in her regal attire, is seen exchanging warm greetings with dignitaries and local officials. The children, including the future King Edward VII and Prince Albert Victor, are also present, gazing curiously at the festivities unfolding before them. The atmosphere is filled with excitement, anticipation, and a sense of unity as the people of Newcastle come together to celebrate this momentous occasion. Landells' masterful composition and use of natural light capture the essence of this historic event, providing a fascinating glimpse into the past and a testament to the grandeur and pageantry of the Victorian era.
