EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Relief of Parthians, located in the Apadana at Persepolis, Iran. The ancient city of Persepolis was meticulously constructed during the reigns of Darius I and his son Xerxes I, who were prominent figures in Achaemenid Persia from 522 to 465 BC. At the heart of this grand city stood the magnificent audience hall known as the Apadana. The relief depicted here adorned the eastern entrance to this prestigious hall and portrayed various subject peoples of the vast Achaemenid empire. Each year, representatives from all corners of this expansive empire would gather at Persepolis to present tribute gifts to their king. From Libya in the west to the Indus valley in the east, these offerings symbolized unity and loyalty within this diverse realm. Intricately carved into stone, this relief captures a vivid scene featuring men on horseback engaging with Bactrian camels—a distinct characteristic of Parthian culture. The attention to detail is remarkable; every line and contour brings life and movement to these ancient figures frozen in time. Vivienne Sharp skillfully captured this momentous artwork through her lens, preserving its historical significance for generations to come. This photograph serves as a testament not only to Persian artistry but also highlights our enduring fascination with archaeological wonders that continue to captivate us today.
