EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Relief of Sogdians, located in the Apadana at Persepolis, Iran. Persepolis, once the capital of Achaemenid Persia, was meticulously constructed during the reigns of Darius I and Xerxes I. The grand audience hall known as the Apadana held great significance within this ancient city. The relief itself is a testament to the vastness and diversity of the Achaemenid empire. Each year, representatives from all corners of this expansive empire would bring tribute to their king. This relief adorns one of the entrances to the Apadana and depicts various subject peoples paying homage. The intricate stone carving skillfully portrays men from different regions dressed in their traditional attire. Among them stands a prominent figure believed to be a Sogdian man, easily identifiable by his distinct clothing and headdress. The attention to detail is remarkable; every fold in their garments and expression on their faces tells a story. Notably, an array of animals accompanies these figures - sheep grazing peacefully alongside powerful rams symbolize prosperity and strength within this diverse empire. Vivienne Sharp's expert photography captures not only the beauty but also preserves historical significance for generations to come. This image transports us back in time, allowing us to marvel at both architectural mastery and cultural richness that defined ancient Persia.
