EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "A Repast in the Monastery, 1865-1875" by Vasily Perov captures a powerful scene of contrasting realities. In this thought-provoking image, we witness the stark divide between the poor and the privileged within Russian society during the 19th century. The painting depicts a group of destitute individuals begging on the floor while well-fed Russian Orthodox priests sit comfortably at a table. The disparity is further emphasized by more wine being opened on the left side of the table, symbolizing excess and indulgence. Vasily Perov, a founding member of Peredvizhniki, was known for his realistic portrayal of social issues. Through this artwork, he sheds light on themes such as greed, hypocrisy, and gluttony prevalent in religious institutions at that time. Perov's visit to Germany and Paris influenced his artistic style greatly. As a professor at Moscow School of Arts, Sculpture and Architecture, he played an instrumental role in shaping future generations of artists. This painting is housed in The State Russian Museum in St Petersburg. It serves as a poignant reminder of societal inequalities that persist even today. By capturing this moment with meticulous detail and profound symbolism, Perov invites viewers to reflect upon their own beliefs about religion, poverty, and compassion.
