Restless Soul (Portrait of the Artist's Daughter, V. I. Repina), 1884, (1965)
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a moment frozen in time - a portrait of Vera Ilyinichna Repina, the beloved daughter of renowned Russian painter Ilya Efimovich Repin. Taken at their dacha in the picturesque village of Martyshkino near St. Petersburg, this painting exudes an air of tranquility and innocence. Repin affectionately referred to his daughter as "Dragonfly" inspired by her vibrant energy and graceful pose basking in the warm sunlight. The choice of title perfectly encapsulates her youthful spirit and ethereal beauty. The artist's skillful use of color brings this portrait to life, with shades of blue balancing harmoniously against Vera's delicate features and flowing dress. Her bonnet adds a touch of nostalgia to the scene, evoking images of idyllic countryside living. As one delves into this artwork from the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, it becomes evident that Repin was not only capturing his daughter's physical appearance but also conveying her inner restlessness - a reflection perhaps on his own artistic journey. Vladimir Fiala eloquently explores Russian painting from the 18th and 19th centuries in his book "Russian Painting". This particular piece stands as a testament to both realism and artistic movement during these transformative times. Immerse yourself in this enchanting portrayal that transcends time - an intimate glimpse into family bonds and artistic inspiration.
