Return of the Prince of Wales from India: Life on Board the Serapis - Tiger and Cheetals...1876. Creator: L.B

Return of the Prince of Wales from India: Life on Board the Serapis - Tiger and Cheetals, from a sketch by an officer of the Serapis, 1876. There were three Indian tigers on board, which were usually kept in cages, but were sometimes led about with a chain by their native keeper. They were, indeed, mere half-grown cubs; the one shown in our Illustration was eight months old. Some tame spotted deer, of the "cheetal" species, were allowed to run loose about the decks; and it was curious to see how eagerly the young carnivorous beasts watched them and strove to get near them'. The future King Edward VII spent several months in India and Nepal, during which time he went tiger hunting. On his first day alone he shot six tigers. Some of the orphaned cubs were brought to England and installed in the newly built Lion House at London Zoo. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Return of the Prince of Wales from India: Life on Board the Serapis - Tiger and Cheetals," dates back to 1876 and was created by L.B, based on a sketch by an officer of the Serapis. The image offers a glimpse into the unique experiences of Prince Albert Edward, the future King Edward VII, during his several-month-long journey to India and Nepal. As the Prince embarked on his voyage back to England, three Indian tigers accompanied him on board the Serapis. These young cubs, only eight months old, were typically kept in cages but were occasionally let loose with a native keeper. The photograph captures one of these tigers, its stripes glistening in the light, as it watches with intense curiosity a herd of spotted deer, known as cheetals, roaming freely on the ship's deck. Prince Albert Edward's time in India was marked by his passion for tiger hunting. On his first day alone, he managed to shoot six tigers. Some of the orphaned cubs were brought back to England and installed in the newly built Lion House at London Zoo, where they became popular attractions. The presence of these exotic animals on board the Serapis not only added an air of adventure to the Prince's journey but also served as a reminder of the rich wildlife and diverse cultures he encountered during his travels in the Indian subcontinent.
